 Weatherization Assistance Program

Weatherization Assistance Program

 Weatherization Works

Weatherization Assistance Program has provided weatherization services to more than 5.5 million low-income families since 1976. It is a record of service to some of society’s neediest citizens that also benefits our nation by reducing our energy dependency, improving the environment, and stimulating economic development in low-income communities.

Weatherization service providers install energy efficiency measures in the homes of qualifying homeowners free of charge. These are not expensive upgrades __the average expenditure limit is $6,500 per home—but they are effective, and energy savings pay for the upgrades within a few years.

The Weatherization Assistance Program provides weatherization services free of charge to approximately 100,000 low-income households every year. Every county and Native American tribe in the country is included in this program. It is one of the few overnment activities that saves more money than it costs.

Weatherization provides energy efficiency services that are tailored to each house and are designed for maximum cost savings. Families receiving weatherization services see their annual energy bills reduced by an average of $200 to $250, depending on fuel prices.

Because the energy retrofits that make up weatherization services are long lived, the savings add up over time to substantial benefits for weatherization clients and their communities, and the nation as a whole.

HOW WILL I BENEFIT BY PARTICIPATING IN THE PROGRAM?

Weatherization will reduce energy bills for 30 years or more. Some measures, such as insulating walls and attics, for example will continue to provide savings for the lifetime of the home. Others, such as making heating and cooling equipment more efficient, will provide savings for 10 to 15 years. On average, the value of the Weatherization improvement to a house is over 200 times greater than the cost of the improvement itself.

Who is Eligible?

One of the primary factors affecting eligibility is income. Persons are eligible for weatherization who have income at or below 200% of poverty level. Written proof of income must be provide for everyone in the household. Persons renting , must get permission from the landlord. Priority will be given, to the elderly, Disabled, and families with young children.
